2022 volunteer dates for your diary

Recent news, including a big achievement

The Friends of Rowley Hills are celebrating a great achievement – the opening up of the lost section of ‘Coaching Road’ on Portway Hill. Over the years this 80m stretch of the old double-hedgerow, which we believe at one time continued all the way to Rowley Church, had been lost to encroaching vegetation. In October 2021 we made a start at clearing it, and the results of our endeavours can be seen in the below photographs.

In other recent news, we warmly welcome Senior Reserves Officer Jake Williams as our new Wildlife Trust representative on the Rowley Hills, and look forward to working with him on future volunteering days which will be announced soon. We also wish Natalie Norton all our best wishes in her new appointment with Butterfly Conservation.

Now that lockdown restrictions have started to be relaxed, volunteer days are back! Under government guidelines we will be working to the rule of 6, so 5 volunteers for now until restrictions change. Anyone wishing to attend a volunteers day on Portway Hill should register with Natalie Norton beforehand on 07713487405, or at natalie.n@bbcwildlife.org.uk to check that there are places available. Hopefully, this rule of six will change as we move further into the season.

The Wildlife Trust have now restarted volunteer days on the Rowley Hills, taking all relevant precautions in light of the coronavirus pandemic. If you would like to attend a volunteer day below, you must contact Natalie Norton at the Wildlife Trust on natalie.n@bbcwildlife.org.uk to book onto the volunteer day prior to the day as volunteer numbers are currently limited to a group of 6. Recent sightings

We’ve had a few nice sightings recently while carrying out conservation work on the hills. All the recent rain has been great for fungi and we’ve spotted some colourful specimens – see photos below for tentative identifications (please let us know if any are incorrect!). The highlight though was around 6 Bank Voles that were found under a pile of cut grass on the Wildlife Trust’s reserve – before they scattered we managed to photograph one! The grassland and scrub here provides ideal habitat for them – although we’ve previously carried out mammal trapping on the hills to monitor which species are present, we hadn’t caught any Bank Voles, so it’s great to know that they are here.

Red Carpet Awards Night, Oakham Church, Wednesday 23rd October 2019, 6:00pm. Come and join the Grace Mary to Lion Farm (GM2LF) Big Local Partnership for their first ever Red Carpet Awards night. The event will celebrate and recognise the talents and skills of local people. The night will include an exhibition of the amazing art work of the Rowley Hills created by children from the local schools as part of the Living Memory Project, awards for our Big Local in Bloom competitions, our very own Big Local Little Voices and a special guest! Intensive litter-picking on the hills!

During January and February FORH have carried out litter-picks along both sides of Portway Hill. The accumulation of dumped rubbish and thrown-out cans and plastic bottles from passing motorists in this area has been of great concern to the Friends of Rowley Hills for some time now and over the past few years the problem with littering has steadily increased.

Portway Hill regularly attracts fly-tipping and from this area alone over 50 bags of rubbish have been removed along with carpets and hazardous waste such as old tyres etc. Litter that had accumulated along the hedgerow in Oakham Road bordering the Dudley Golf Club land between the Wheatsheaf and Warrens Hall Care Home has also been removed. We are grateful to Serco and Sandwell Council for their prompt response in organising the collection of the litter-filled bags and other rubbish from the roadside.

We would also like to thank Mark Smith and staff at Edwin Richards Quarry who have carried out litter-picks from their side of the fence on the bank overlooking Portway Hill.

‘Looking Back’ walk led by Jim Rippin and Mike Poulton, Saturday 13th April 2019, 10:00am – 1:00pm. Meet at the entrance to Bury Hill Park. Cost £6 payable on the day (all proceeds go to the Friends of Rowley Hills). A guided walk-and-talk over the Rowley Hills with archive photographs. Following on from our very successful ‘Looking Back’ walk in September 2018 by popular request we have decided to repeat the event again this spring. This is a specially designed guided walk-and-talk based around a series of remarkable photographs taken by Jim Rippin over the last 70 years. The walk will invite us to see the area in new and fascinating ways, helping us to reflect on the many changes that have taken place within living memory. Souvenir booklets with old photographs will also be available to purchase on the day.

Dawn chorus walk, Portway Hill, Monday 6th May 2019, time to be confirmed. Join local bird expert Nick Horton for a dawn chorus walk around the Portway Hill site. In December Nick spotted a Red Kite on two separate occasions over Turners/Portway Hill and watched crows mobbing a Raven. We will also be on the lookout for Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Peregrine, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel, all birds regularly seen on the hillside. Wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the early morning weather conditions. Meet on St Brades Close at the junction with Tower Road.

Our volunteers day on Portway Hill on the 20th October was very productive. We cleared all of the grass and bramble debris piled up from the previous volunteers day and even managed to find a few new fungi for the Portway Hill site. The reason for removing all arisings from the site is to reduce soil fertility which should in time increase the diversity of the wild flowers and insects found here.
